Although it was once thought that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) programs would be the answer to working with ADHD children and getting them to slow down and think, unfortu- nately CBT programs have not been proven to be an effective approach to working with ADHD populations (Abikoff, Ganeles & Reiter, 1988).
However, CBT has been shown to be effective with a large variety of mental disorders that commonly co-occur with ADHD, such as anxiety, depression and substance abuse (Plotts & Lasser, 2013).
The most common and successful multimodal programs for children with ADHD use some combination of medication use and another form of intervention such as CBT or behavior methods.
Antidepressant medications and CBT are the treatments of choice.
Treatment can involve SSRI medications, behavioral therapy (Rachman's procedure) and CBT.
